Are you entering the University of Hawai‘i this fall & would like a "jumpstart" to help you get adjusted? Are you considering studying at an American university sometime in the future? Would you simply like to improve your English in a curriculum with academic emphasis?

Summer NICE ACADEMIC may be the perfect program for YOU!

Academic Classes
Focused on academic listening, speaking, and cultural expectations of an American university setting, this special academic section prepares students with language skills and strategies for success in the university classroom.

Program Hours
Hours are generally from 1:30-4:20 in the AFTERNOONS, Monday through Friday, with a couple of exceptions (see sample calendar). Classes are held on the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa campus.

Program Features

  • Two DYNAMIC CLASSES:                                                                      ACADEMIC INTERACTION--Become familiar with language and cultural expectations in the Ameircan university environment.  Work on comrehension of academic lectures, participation in class discussions, and building confidence for interacting with professors and classmates both in and out of class.             RESEARCH WORKSHOP--Learn and practice skills for doing research.  Participate in a mini-research project and class presentation.
  • Meet twice a week with UH STUDENTS to practice your English and talk about many aspects of the university experience, for example, locating campus resources, making friends, communicating effectively with professors.
  • VISIT one or more UHM CLASSES (morning hours).
  • Attend a HAWAIIAN CULTURE workshop (optional).
  • Participate in an OFF-CAMPUS EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY to learn about Hawaii's history & culture while interacting with community people.
  • Participate in Summer NICE OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS that do not conflict with the class schedule. Examples: Sightseeing tours, concert, movie on the beach

Eligibility
Participants must be 18 years or older for the Academic section. Students must place in the high intermediate or advanced level on first day of the Summer NICE program OR have a TOEFL score of 500 (paper test) or 173 (IBT). Students interested in the academic section that do not meet the level requirement will be placed in the "regular" Summer NICE program.

Application requirements and procedures, program dates, and program fees are the same as for the "regular" Summer NICE program. Please indicate "academic section" on your application!
