Mission Statement
The mission of the New Intensive Courses in English (NICE) is to equip speakers of other languages with the language and cultural skills necessary for success in academic, professional, and social contexts. To fully serve students with different goals, the program offers a full-time program with three tracks, each of which emphasizes oral communication and cultural competence. Each program has its own specific focus.
- The goal of Track A (Academic) is to offer exemplary instruction for students who have specific goals for using English successfully in academic contexts.
- The goal of Track B (Business) is to offer exemplary instruction for students who have specific goals for using English successfully in professional contexts.
- The goal of Track C (General Communication) is to offer exemplary instruction in conversational English for students who have goals for using English successfully in everyday living and social contexts.
Both programs fulfill the overall mission by:
- Specializing in innovative methods for teaching listening and speaking skills;
- Providing a flexible curriculum suited to the students' interests, needs, and abilities while adhering to the overall curriculum guidelines for each course;
- Developing and practicing real-world listening and speaking tasks, which may include authentic readings as input and realistic writing as output;
- Maximizing opportunities to use the communication skills learned in the classroom on campus and in the community;
- Providing a culturally diverse, enriching, and supportive learning environment while fostering a sense of "aloha."
Since we are a "mission-driven" program, all activities, materials, and texts are selected with the goals of the mission in mind: prepare students for the skills needed for success in academic, business, and situations in which English is the language of general use.
